Martin Lessard, Sherry
|
December 29, 2011:
Sherry writes "The back surgery is "still healing". There was
non-union of the involved bones but the VA has provided a
"bone growth stimulator" which seems to be pulling things
together. And physical therapy helps, as does a
form-fitting back brace, pain meds and just plain everyday
living/good attitude! (You know the old saying, "If I knew
I were going to live this long, I would have taken better
care of myself..." Ha.) In addition to missing the
reunion this past summer, I missed a medical convention in
Reno, NV. (National ostomy association...that's the "hole"
truth...)
Then Les had his turn at back surgery 11-11-11...laminectomy
at three lumbar levels. He's doing fairly well himself
although the legs seem to be especially weak (like walking
with rubber). Les' favorite quote: "Getting old is not for
sissies..."
My father is still on hospice....tough guy. He's been on
hospice almost a year now....he remains quite sharp,
cognitively speaking. Not bad for 96-1/2. I'm quite
blessed to still have my father--we've always been the best
of friends and still are.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Harry Martin,
Sherry's father.
The funeral was Monday, Feb. 6
Harry C. Martin of Springfield, who died Jan. 30 of
age-related causes. He was 96.
He was born Aug. 5,
1915, in Fayette, N.D., to William and Rosa Knabe
Martin. He married Deborah Lever on Oct. 20, 1951, in
McMinnville. She died Oct. 25, 2001.
He attended schools
in North Dakota. He was in the Civilian Conservation
Corps from April 1937 to April 1939.
He served in the U.S.
Army during World War II. He was a mill worker at Eugene
Plywood, a custom farmer in Springfield, owned a local
peat moss company, owned and operated Martin’s Trucking
in Springfield and owned and operated the Chevron
Station at 42nd and Main streets in Springfield.
Survivors include a
daughter, Sherry Lessard of Springfield. He was preceded
in death by a son, James Martin, on Nov. 2, 2007.
OK---I always thought exercise was to be a GOOD thing!!
Granted when Terry and I started our exercise program we
hit the ground running---2 hours in the gym 4 days per
week. It went well for the first 6 months until my
thyroid went on "overdrive" which then set the heart
into A-fib.... Well with a doctor working with me I
have gotten the thyroid back into normal range (thank
you--I still have the thyroid) and after last Tuesday I
went in for a cardioversion. What an experience!!
However, with the medication that I was started on
required 48 hours of monitoring in the cardio unit of
the hospital. Long story short I'm back into rhythm and
in hopes that things will continue. A bit tired, but
that is to be expected-----so next week back to routine
(only a bit slower....)...
Take Care, GLoria
rehabilitation. He has been improving and tomorrow
will be going home. He then will be close to his
computer if you want to send him an email.
From
Dave's wife: Just got home from a morning
visit with David. He is out of ICU and on an
intermediate care floor. He has had good nurses and
likes his doctor-says they have become buddies. He has
had some of the post-op problems of fluid retention and
some irregular heart beat but they are controlling it
all. He had been up in the chair, had a walk, been to
x-ray so was ready for a nap. Think that will be his
schedule for the next little while. More later. Linda
1-14-12
Wednesday, January 11, 2012, Dave had open
heart surgery with 6 bypasses. He will spend the first
night in ICU. He seems to be doing fine.
Maybe a little background. I have COPD and fibro. I have
extreme pain in my left leg that until just lately the
doctors didn’t know the cause of . Now after about 6 years
we know and if my insurance will approve surgery then I will
be hopefully, on my way to being reasonably pain free. I am
on oxygen full time and have a problem with pneumonia. I am
not an unhappy person as this sounds. I am a beader.
I also, make cards and do some sewing. So I do stay
busy as long as I can keep the pain under control. I am
sorry I couldn’t come to the reunion, as it turned out I was
in the hospital with pneumonia. A slight view of my
retirement years. Would love to hear from any classmates
that would like to write.
