3-5-10
I had my first Chemo treatment today  (it was scheduled for yesterday, but they forgot to tell me some things had to happen the day before).  At any rate, the treatment although long (about 6-hours) was a piece of cake.  However, the next 2 -3 days or a week will tell what my tolerance level is and if there are any side effects to deal with.  At this point, I feel VERY optomistic!

Thank you again for your thoughts and prayers,

John & Nina Hales

2-26-10  update

Just a note to keep you apprised of my cancer situation.

I just received the results of the MRI and PET scan that were taken earlier this week.  They showed the cancer had not spread to any other area that wasn't already known:  i.e. lymph nodes, lung, and around my chest.  I will start Chemo treatments on Thursday.  I believe I will have a trestment every three weeks, and a total of six treatments,

We want to thank you all again for your thoughts and prayers!!  If we didn't already know it, PRAYERS do work.

2-6-10    John just sent out the following email and he gave me his permission to post it.

Hi All:

In the past I have sent out many jokes, and other laughable mails.  Unfortunately, this will not be one of them.

I have been confirmed with advanced cancer.  It apparently started in my lymph nodes and has spread at least to my lungs.  I will meet with the oncologist on the 19th, but the outlook (according to the lung cancer doctor) is: "grim".  I will keep you apprised, but prayers, especially for Nina,  will be appreciated.

Do you remember in a recent email I sent, the announcement of a new restaurant on Main Street of Springfield?  FILLET OF SOUL
A taste of the South now can be savored in Springfield. Momma’s Kitchen is the newest restaurant downtown, with claims as the only soul food …

Here's a review from Nick:
WELL WE WENT TO MAMA'S KITCHEN AND BOY DID WE GET SCREWED!  ON A FRIDAY EVE WE GOT THERE AT 5:30.  NO RIBS LEFT OF ANY KIND, WE ORDERED PORK CHOPS.  WE ORDERED ONE PLATE OF THEM AND WAS TOLD THEY ONLY HAD ONE CHOP LEFT, SO WE TOLD THEM OK WE'D TAKE THE ONE THEY HAD.  WE GOT CHARGED FOR TWO, PLUS IT WAS OVER COOKED.  WE ASKED FOR JUICE TO DRINK, 3 WERE LISTED.  THEY WERE OUT OF JUICE OF ANY KIND.  WE ASKED IF WE COULD SUB OKRA FOR THE MAC AND CHEESE THAT CAME WITH THE DINNER.  WE WERE TOLD THAT WOULD BE FINE.  WE GOT CHARGED FOR THAT TOO!  SORRY, BUT WE WILL NOT BE BACK.  PLUS IT TOOK 45 MINUTES TO COOK THE ONE PORK CHOP AND TWO PIECES OF CATFISH.  THEY SERVE ROOM TEMP WATER.  YOU HAVE TO ASK FOR ICE.  LUCKILY WE WEREN'T CHARGED FOR THAT. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE WITH WHAT WE EXPERIENCED. I BET THEY DON'T LAST LONG.

Carol Rombold

Gary had a heart attack.   He had been participating in a martial arts class Sunday night.  Nothing new.  After class he started feeling some pressure in his chest and not feeling well.  No pain and didn’t get sick.  He came home and was up most of the night.  He didn’t want me to call 911.  He didn’t really know what was wrong.

I finally called out doctor and they told me to take him to emergency.  Our descriptions of problem didn’t warrant an ambulance.  I drove him in and they admitted him.  Blood tests showed he had had a heart attack.  He had surgery on Tuesday and had 2 stents put in.  He had one artery that was 99% blocked.  The echocardiogram was done and show he had minor damage to the heart.

He was very lucky.  He is home now and will have some new meds to take.  Can resume his normal activities in a day or so, but with caution.  Start gradual and work back up to where he was.

2009:   After loosing both spouses, Mike BeBout and I have become partners. We have known each other since third grade and have many friends and classmates in common.

We are very active and have many adventures that include biking, kayaking, hiking and volunteering. Biking tours in OR, ID, UT, The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany have been challenging but also fun. A train trip from Amsterdam to Florence, Italy included seeing the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It was magnificent. It must have been on my "bucket list".

We have hiked many places including Black Butte and Tam MacArthur Rim, which we led for the class campout in 2009. We were preparing to climb Mt. St. Helens.

Over 20 Wilderness Volunteering trips have taken us to such places as a barrier island off the west coast of FL, Canyonlands in UT, Chaco Canyon National Historic site in NM, Klamath Marsh and John Day Wilderness in OR. Removing exotic and invasive plants, rolling old barb wire, pulling posts and building trails are some of the work that needs to be done to improve our country.

Looking forward to our 50th reunion
