2011 fishing trip
TO THE ODELL
LAKE OLDIES
Well, the
34TH ODELL LAKE EXTRAVAGANZA has run it's course!!!!!!!!
Once again we had a stellar group of classmates turn out for our
CLASS OF 61 weekend of frolic, food and fun!!!!!!!
This particular weekend started on a sad note as we
were missing three of our longtime weekenders with the passing
of Dave Love, Jim Ferguson and John Hales this past year....
We aren't getting any younger and if you want to see some of
these old farts, you better start coming to this get
together!!!!!!!
We started on
Wednesday with our disorganizational meeting at the Primetime
and just kept rolling from there. Fourteen classmates showed
up and Larry Piquette was there to keep us in line but
unfortunately couldn't join us at the lake. Maybe one of
these days????
We met at Manley's
Tavern at Crescent on Friday about noon and the party was
on....... Larry Bruhn ruled supreme on the pool tables again
(we need someone to come along and challenge this pool
shark). The broasted chicken and jo jo's were their usual
hit!!! Jim Thompson, Rich Tennent, Mel Paxton, Jim
Baumgartner, Tom Fountain, even John Harper and Jack
Hathaway challenged the video poker machines with Russell Harris
and Bill Elliot working the keno board... We more than held our
own.... SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE!!!!!
On to the gorgeous
Kokanee Lodge where we assembled for our scrumptious
dinner........... BBQ steak Baumgartner, spuds Guempelein,
garlic bread Hollandsworth and ala Tennent salad!!!!!
When we had sufficiently gorged ourselves, the card games
and BULL---- commenced!!!!!!!!! We need a new award for
the BIGGEST LIAR!!!!!!! Tom Fountain beat the likes of Dave
Sears, Rich Tennent, Bill Guempelein, Eric Skinner, Jim
Baumgartner, Fred Dellinger and an unusually boisterous, Dave
Hollandsworth!!!! Russell Harris out lasted Jack Hathaway,
Mel Paxton, Dick Jones, Jim Thompson, Larry Bruhn, Jim Pedersen,
John Harper, Jack McCreary and Brian Whitlow in several spirited
games of 31!!!!!!
The mounds of snow and
an overnight thunder storm couldn't dampen the spirits of this
hardy group!!!!!! Tom Fountain, Eric Skinner and Dick Jones
produced a breakfast that even Barney of Barney's Diner at 21st
and Main would be proud of!!! The Bloody Mary bartender of some
note was the ever popular, Mel Paxton!!!! Our resident
chambermaids, Mike East and Eric Skinner did their usual great
job of cleaning up after us the entire weekend!!!! The
cribbage session ensued with Dave Sears, Rich Tennent and Fred
Dellinger... Then our golf hackers, Dave Hollandsworth, Tom
Fountain and Fred Dellinger rode off to join Darrell Linklater
at Lapine for a round of golf....... it sure got
quiet!!!!!!!! Bill Erickson arrived in time for our BBQ
Burger and beans lunch..... Jack Hathaway, Larry Bruhn,
Mike East and Russell Harris headed out for a little
fishing......I should say just dragging a bunch of junk around
the lake with no results!!!!!!!!!! Bill Elliot, Mike East,
Dave Sears, Richard Tennent, John Harper, Bill Guempelien, Bill
Erickson, Dick Jones, Jack McCreary, Mel Paxton, Brian Whitlow,
Jim Pedersen, Erik Skinner and Jim Baumgartner engaged
in many current, not so current, down right ancient and possibly
even true tales about their adventures and happenings thru the
years!!!!!!! When the pro golfers and fisher folk returned,
we readied the fabulous Tennent baked fish frenzy!!!!! As
usual a masterpiece of culinary delight with salad, garlic bread
and delicious Halibut and Salmon provide by our award winning
chefs!!!!!! You would think we had had enough of cards, but
as if they had a life of their own, once again the poker and 31
games ensued!!!! Once again Russell Harris was the 31
winner.........Someone should tell Barb that he won enough
for that new addition on the house??????????? When the
curfew sounded for the poker game, Dave Hollandsworth ruled
supreme........ We all found that hard to believe!!!!!!
Sunday morning found
us once again enjoying the delights of our Barney's Diner wantabe
breakfast chefs!!!! When the smoke had all cleared it was
time for our awards ceremony...... Since there was not a
fish caught or even a verifiable bite, THE GRIZ WAS
NOT AWARDED!!! However for the sorriest ------- fisherman
category, THE RECIPIENTS ARE THE AFOREMENTIONED BRAIN
CHALLENGED INDIVIDUALS who braved the elements to no
avail!!!!!!! Now to the PAIN IN THE ASS AWARD...........
Since John Harper, who with only a couple of blips on his
record, for over thirty years has had a firm grip on this award
was such a sedate and quiet weekender with virtually no chance
to repeat, I decided to let him make this prestigious
award!!!!!! Thinking the front runners were unquestionably
Fred Dellinger and Dave Hollandsworth, I was blindsided when my
buddy of over 50 years to whom I have been a faithful friend,
loyal comrade and his confessor thru the years, TURNED ON
ME, AND TO THE DELIGHT OF ALL THE EXTRAVAGANZERS..... AWARDED...
JIM BAUMGARTNER THE PAIN IN THE ASS AWARD!!!!!!!!!!!
Once again we had a
successful weekend outing with 21 classmates from the great
class of 61 where we thoroughly enjoyed each others company...
We would love to welcome other class mates to join us....
AS ALWAYS WE INVITE OTHER CLASSMATES TO JOIN US FOR NEXT
YEARS 35TH ODELL LAKE EXTRAVAGANZA!!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT MISS
THIS FUN TRIP!!!!!!! Since again we had questionable weather,
we have changed our reservations to the first week of June in
future years.... 2012 will be on Wednesday,
June 6th, Thursday, June 7th and Friday June 8th..........
Hopefully we will catch sunny skies and actually get in some
good fishing along with our other various activities!!!! If
anyone has any suggestions to enhance our outing, please contact
either Dave Sears or Jim Baumgartner???????
This
confession is brought to you by the non poker loser and
sometimes tall tale teller,
JIM BAUMGARTNER
